To be sure, an R8 is never slow to begin with. But it gets even faster when tuned by ABT Sportsline. Then it will be very brawny indeed, without any excess weight whatsoever. The  R8 GT R edition is limited to 25 cars, and for its design the designers and engineers also made use of the experiences they had gained in motorsports.  All components are lightweight and geared to an ideal weight distribution. Not only the bonnet, front apron and rear apron, the adjustable rear wing and the hatchback are made of carbon, but also the aerofoil lip, the exterior mirrors and the door lining. The side windows are made of Macrolon, which doesn’t only reduces weight, it is also very robust. The ABT R8 GT R is thus more than 100 kg lighter than the serial version.

How much racing capability the team of the latest winners of the DTM and the ADAC GT Masters championships really has produced is revealed by the details: Recaro racing seats, 4-point belts, stainless steel roll-over bar with belt mounting, portable fire extinguisher or ABT sports steering wheel made of carbon fibres – ABT has thought of everything. “The R8 GT R is an uncompromising racing car for the road. It’s performance is second to none,” says Christian Abt. The successful motorsport veteran has been responsible for the development of this exceptional car and is convinced of its superb quality. “You should try this car on a race track from time to time. It’s huge fun,”  the technical managing director adds. The adjustable front plate makes a sporty use possible. A driver’s overall, a helmet, racing shoes and racing gloves are part of the extras, as are an on-board video system and an expandable data module

The “well-trained” sports car has a huge potential: Instead of the serial 525 hp (386 kW), the 5.2 FSI in the ABT R8 GT R shows an enormous 620 hp (456 kW). This makes the lightweight car very fast indeed: Its top speed is 325 km/h. It sprints from naught to 100 km/h in no more than 3.2 seconds and to 200 km/h in 9.9 seconds. This requires a height-adjustable ABT sport chassis and adjustable shock absorbers in the ABT R8 GT R Standard. The ceramic braking system with its modified brake pads is geared to the super sports car’s huge performance potential. The extremely light ABT CR wheels complete the package. On the front axle, it is the 9x18-inch wheel, on the rear axle the 11x18. The Michelin Sportcup tyres are the perfect choice. The ABT R8 GT R is a unique car, which provides utmost fun.
