With a maximum drive speed of more than 300 kph, golf is one of the fastest ball sports ever. If you want a similarly fast “Golf car”, you have to go no further than ABT Sportsline. The Golf VII R, with a respectable “handicap” to begin with, after a visit to the “Bavarian Driving Range“ features 400 hp / 294 kW, one third up from its serial 300 hp / 221 kW. “To top our previous uprating to 370 hp, we have not only optimised the ABT Engine Control software but also installed a sport-type catalytic converter,“ says CEO Hans-Jürgen Abt. Both the ABT Power and the new, strong ABT Power S kit are based upon the specially developed ABT control unit, which guarantees maximum power and utmost dependability. This has been proven on our own dynamometer and on public roads. All you need now is the right driver and outfit. The ABT-tuned Golf VII R, a real “pro”, features high-quality attachment parts, which much distinguish it from the serial version, e.g. a painted ABT front grille and the right headlight covers. Mighty side skirts signal other drivers that a fast car is approaching. An ABT height adjustable suspension kit will make the car always maintain its lane, even at high speeds. However, when you want to show others this Golf’s nice rear, do it in a “fair way”. The ABT tail gate add-on is also worth a closer look. But even more impressive are possibly the four mighty exhaust pipes of a diameter of 101mm, which is roughly the size of a golf hole. These are part of the ABT exhaust system, which comes with a pre-silencer and axle back exhaust and makes for a good uprating and sound. And you can also choose from a number of ABT Sportsline alloy wheels and complete sets of wheels with tyres from 18 to 20 inches. Moreover, the rim designs ER-C, DR and CR are available in various finishes.
With 310 HP / 228 kW and 380 Nm torque the Clubsport S is almost three times as powerful as the original GTI of the 70s. However this über-golf VII is by no means a hard to maneuver muscleman, on the contrary it clearly excels with its agility and finely calibrated handling. You want proof? In autumn 2016, this Wolfsburger grabbed the title for the fastest front-wheel drive on the Nordschleife. Although worthy opponents are in short supply right now, it is quite easy to surpass existing performance. Support can be found in the Allgäu, where ABT POWER, has enabled increased performance with a specially developed control unit and matching software. The result after optimization: 370 HP / 272 kW and 460 Nm torque. Normal road users however, are far more likely to encounter the standard Clubsport more often than the rare Golf VII GTI Clubsport S, and moreover the ABT variant. 265 HP / 195 kW and 350 Nm is not always it easy for the establishment, but to achieve real sports car exhilaration you just have to go that extra mile. Luckily, the world's largest tuner of vehicles for the VW and Audi group also provides for the standard Clubsport drivers. The 340 HP / 250 kW and 430 Nm even surpasses the standard Clubsport S. And if that is still not enough: The standard boost function remains, which quickly releases even more power. Both cars are already well equipped with regards to suspension technology. For an even sharper appearance and that little extra driving pleasure ABT Sportsline have conjured up new suspension springs and sports anti-roll bars. And in order to make clear that this is no ordinary GTI Clubsport S, the vehicle can be further enhanced with a new front grille, headlight covers, mirror caps and a tailgate attachment.
Already the first Golf GTI wiped its mostly stronger opponents from the fast lane on the motorway by the dozen. But with its originally 112 HP, even after the facelift it wasn’t quite ready to attack the high-power sports cars, yet. Later the GTI was upgraded to 16V and G60 versions, which were again surpassed by the VR6 and R-models. The latter, in turn, found their match in their ABT counterparts. The latest counterpart is the Golf VII R with 400 HP / 294 kW instead of the standard 310 HP / 228 kW. Meaning that the specially developed ABT Engine Control (AEC) unit is responsible for a staggering power increase of 30 percent. The maximum torque is also increased from 400 to 500 Nm. “Even the special model Golf R360S, which was briefly offered ex works in Switzerland, is left behind,” explains Managing Director Hans-Jürgen Abt. Thanks to four-wheel drive, the standard Golf R model already has plenty of traction. The optional ABT suspension springs, which lower the sports model by 20 mm at the front and 25 mm at the rear, make sure the pocket rocket handles even hairpin bends with ease.
And even more so when the ABT Anti-Roll Bars are on board as well. This can be increased even further with the ABT Height Adjustable Suspension-Kit, which can lower the front axle by max. 40 mm and the rear axle by max. 45 mm. And anyway: The one who can brake faster, can maintain his speed longer. In line with this principle, the company has a powerful 6-piston brake system with fixed calipers in their product range to stop all that horsepower. After stopping a literal horse you would use stirrups to dismount. The human ear also needs a stirrup, a small bone, to transmit sound. And this stirrup will be exposed to a lot of sound coming from the four-pass ABT Rear Muffler with 102 mm outlets. This arrangement is also pleasant to look at with its black chrome tailpipe – just like the attractive alloy wheels from ABT. The worldwide-leading tuning company for VW and Audi models supplies its DR and ER-C designs in different finishes and in the sizes 18, 19 or 20 inches. But this is not the last of options for optical individualization: Naturally, ABT Side Skirts and a Tailgate Add-on designed as a diffusor are simply a must-have for a powerful appearance. After all: it's okay to show off performance!
